Theresa Oats started drawing at a young age, often coloring with a crayon–which she never mastered. Her father taught her the principles of mechanical drawing and perspective. Majoring in design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, she studied human anatomy, drawing the human form, and the depiction of apparel on the human form. Eventually, she took classes in advanced design with Steve Wolfe.
She’s been a full time painter since 1988. She works from life with oils. Her inspiration is related to favorite subjects and their relation to form, color, light, mood, emotion, mystery, and the unconscious; not always in the same painting. Natural surroundings, art books, museums, galleries, science, authors, friends, family, the art community and her husband, Jim McVicker continue to inspire her.
