Michael Carpenter was born in North Hollywood, CA. Following high school Michael accepted a Summer scholarship to the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Ca. focusing on drawing and painting. In 1962 Michael made the choice to fulfill his military obligation and joined the US Navy with the incentive of the GI Bill, which made continuing in art school affordable.
Michael attended Clark College in Vancouver, WA for two years, majoring in the visual arts. He then went on to study illustration at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, CA. for two years, studying with Dan McCaw, Bill Robles and Don Putnam.
This professional training helped in eventually developing a professional career as an illustrator. Michael spent more than twenty years in Portland, OR in the field of illustration and graphic design with clients such as Nike and Bonneville Power.
Finally, the opportunity came to pursue a life long passion of study in fine art oil painting. Traveling to attend workshops in Santa Fe, NM and Northern CA, for further study in landscape and figurative painting, was a big part of Michael’s continued study and resulted in gaining confidence and experience in technique through inspiring artists such as Doug Higgins, Ron Rencher, and Kevin Macpherson. Through their guidance and direction, Michael achieved a deeper appreciation for the challenges in the pursuit of fine art painting.
Michael’s memberships have included the California Art Club, New Mexico Art League and the Oil Painters of America. He is a member of the Oil Painters of America since 1994 and has attained a signature membership status in the OPA. His paintings include subjects and locations in New Mexico, Northern California, Oregon and Washington State. He has been represented in all four states.
Michael has come to acknowledge the unique gift of a life long vocation as an artist and to be truly thankful for the opportunity in bringing inspiration and pleasure to those viewers who enjoy representational art.
