Lyle attributes his first fascination with pencil art to an early childhood memory back on his family's Colorado farm. His parents had bought him a set of colored pencils as a birthday gift, and his dad, though not an artist himself, had done a quick sketch of a homesteader's cabin in the woods. Lyle remembers being amazed that with a few pencils you could create a scene, capture the viewer's imagination, and take him to that place.

"My favorite medium has always been pencil. Black and white by nature has a classic look and a distinctive mood all its own, and pencil in particular is capable of rendering sharp detail. Due to the time it takes to achieve the realistic quality I'm after, a drawing usually takes several months to complete.

I enjoy the challenge of trying to create a picture that is not only artistically pleasing, but also conveys a message. It is this communicative aspect that has become my primary motivation for creating art.
